I want to help everyone I meet; I want to help them do amazing things. So it’s natural that I want to help people be successful each day, and at the end of each year. I’ve learned a lot over the years by not doing it the best, but in those years I’ve gained some tools and habits. The key to success is to keep on trying even when you fail time after time.

It wasn’t until my late 40’s when I met a guy from Nike who was in charge of an international team that was tasked with moving the Nike brand across the globe where I learned a simple trick to be successful in any area of my life I wanted to see change or growth. The key was a weekly family meeting between my wife and me. We would discuss goals in 7 areas of our daily lives for the week in the areas of God, Family, Finances, Health, Intellectual/Creative, Recreation, and Miscellaneous. We would also assign tasks to one another and set follow-up reminders to help get things done.

Once that was going (and it has changed and morphed through the years to fit our style and goals), I realized that our family had no real goals or targets to aspire toward for the year. This was because in our weekly family meeting we were only focusing on the day to day in that week with no meaningful end in sight. We were simply letting the “what happens next” of the day dictate how we went through our weeks. So I started a habit of thinking about the next year’s goals and targets in August and September (just thinking about them…nothing more). Then, putting pen to paper in October and November in the seven focus areas, I started writing the plan to be sure we would work on making a positive direction each month toward a year we were in charge of and happy with.

Working in November and December to create an actionable plan for success will toss the old New Year’s Resolutions out the door and you will see success at the end of the year as you set targets in one or several of the 7 areas at the beginning of the year. There is an awesome book called “The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results” by Garry Keller and Jay Papasan that will help you narrow your annual goals and decide how to clear away the clutter of to-do’s down to a “One Thing” you should focus on to make your goals a reality. This is a must-read…I cannot recommend this book enough.

If you took one hour to learn how to goal set, and if this one this hour could change your life, wouldn’t you invest an hour to be successful? This free goal-setting training by “The One Thing” team will change your future. Watch the goal-setting video as the first best step in your future success. To have your own goal setting retreat this month or even in January, just download the Goal Setting Retreat Guide and schedule a weekend to do your best work on success next year (if you are single, you can still use the couples retreat guide as a framework for your personal goals, so don’t toss it out the window).

The next tool I have found is the anti-tech answer to getting focus and clarity while staying on track with your daily focus tasks toward your monthly bigger rocks to see success each year to come. The Full Focus Planner is a paper book that you actually have to write in with a pen by hand. This powerful tool will help organize everything in your life and ease you toward your goals one day at a time, and one focused task at a time.

Watch the story of the Full Focus Planner here, and you will see the way it all came together and possibly how this tool can be one of your best tools every day toward succeeding in your big and small goals each year. I purchased the quarterly subscription to the Full Focus Planner this past year and it has come to my mailbox each quarter in advance of the next quarter for me to assess, plan, and write down the actions I MUST do to make my plan for the year executable. I work hard every day, and this year my daily hard work is doing the actions to make the plan for the year a success. I have probably purchased every possible planning system in the last 20-years in hopes of finding the magic tool toward succeeding. This analog tool is simple and so obvious in the way it leads you to think about your goals and tasks. I have never been as successful in my daily routines toward year-end targets until I started using The Full Focus Planner in 2019.

“How can I help you today” is my goal every day, but if I’m not able to successfully execute on the actual promise to help you, those words are just fluff. Having a clear focus on the small actions I can do each day helps me know that I’m able to answer all of your questions, and do the actions to help you be successful in 2020.
